Sunni's Flights Of Fancy

Stories of my own imagining.

Stargazing
A very short piece expressing my love of nature and my spouse.
The Great Rite of Mother Moon
My pagan interpretation of a partial lunar eclipse.
Earth Smells
Earth. Smell comes to me first. Each landscape has its own smell. I have a passion for the earth, her smells, her diversity, her temperament. That's why I'm a hunter and an eco-freak. I can get out of the house and smell, listen, feel, taste. Following are some of the places I found most memorable.
Same Story, Two Age Groups
This is a brief description of one day hunting in the Rogue River National Forest. I have written the same story twice, targeting two different audiences - elementary aged children and educated, adult outdoors-folk.
People Watching
My Creative Writing teacher challenged us once to go forth and observe something for half an hour. "Describe it!" she ordered. "I want to see it!" So I went to the local superstore and parked myself in the restaurant. This is the result.
Morning Vignette
My Creative Writing teacher presented us with a picture of an aged woman of undeterminable years. "What do you see?" she asked. This is the result.
Same Rock, Two Perceptions
My writing teacher handed each of the students a small stone the first day of class. "We'll say I'm blind," she declared. "Tell me what it looks like!" This being our first class, I took her challenge seriously at first. But I am irrepressible and have earned my nickname, Sunni, well and truly. So I gave in to a fit of humor. Hence, two descriptions.
Dragon Fantasy
I was on a Temporary Duty assignment to Travis Air Force Base, California, and was billeted on the ground floor in the enlisted quarters. I have a vivid imagination and a love for fantasy. This story is the result of these things.
Waking Interactions
I have often been asked how I can be so *bleeping* cheerful when I get to work in the morning. When my Creative Writing teacher asked us to describe our morning routine, I pounced on the opportunity to put on paper just what it is that starts my days off right.
An English Dichotomy
I have driven from coast to coast across the heart of England and seen many wonders and wonderful things. One particular day, however, struck me especially. I share that day with you here.
Honesty At A High Price
As a child and young adult, I lied frequently. Today, I don't lie. If the truth is too hurtful, I don't fabricate - I simply hold my tongue. This is why I no longer lie.
Horror
While I have never been a prisoner of war, as a raw, new aircrewman with the United States Air Force, I received Prisoner Of War Camp Training. After intense training, I was tossed into a simulated prisoner of war camp for 24 hours. It is a laughable pittance compared to what the real Vets lived through, but enough to make my blood run cold and to know I never wanted to be a prisoner of war. This very short story is the result of that experience festering for over two decades. I beg any Vets who read this to forgive me. This story, after my one paltry day, must seem like hubris to you. My mind boggles at the true horror you have to live with.
Learning How To Be A Tourist
I love a road trip. Short or long, out and back same day or for weeks - I love road trips. As a child, my parents didn't just take trips, they were always on a quest when we went somewhere - anywhere - and we always had such a grand time. This story is the result of remembering my daddy's contribution to my sense of adventure.
Getting The Blues
Ever the inquisitive child (I haven't changed much with age), I was always into something. This was one of my most memorable adventures into foolishness.
A Teddybear's Perspective
In my last marriage, I immersed myself into the relationship and forgot to maintain my own personality. I became an extension of my husband, molding myself as close as possible to his ideals. By the time I'd realized my mistake, it was too late to reestablish my independence or reclaim my own wants and needs without damaging the marriage irreparably. This story is a retrospective statement about being true to yourself.
