People Watching

(For my college writing class, the teacher – a magnificent woman of great enthusiasm – challenged us to go forth and observe something for half an hour. "Describe it!" she ordered. "I want to see it!" So I went to the local superstore and parked myself in the restaurant. This is the result.)

In a single row before me from left to right are the checkout stands for the Fred Meyer variety store. Directly in front of me is Register Six, which is tended by a short fireplug of a man. Though he rarely smiles, he is open-faced and not unfriendly. He is patient, professional, maintaining a demeanor that politely discourages idle conversation, and using economy of motion greatly to his advantage. His liquid-black eyes never rest, keeping track of his surroundings and the activity within his purview while never losing focus on his customer. He repeats the same things endlessly without any visible sign of emotion, making him appear timeless. When he is relieved, he efficiently and quickly gathers his drawer and gear and duckwalks to another register to relieve another cashier for break. He stows his drawer and gear and begins anew as though nothing has changed.
