Like my friend, Sunni, I love to take pictures and I am an amateur. It is my dream to someday be a photographer for National Geographic magazine. Photography is something I truly need, not just want, to explore. I am learned a few basics from Sunni and so begins my journey. I hope you enjoy my modest start.
Sunni let me use her digital camera and we drove up the hill above our house and took pictures of an old circa 1930's or so jalopy rusted into the ground. The challenge was to take several rolls of "film" of nothing else, just the car, and no two pictures could be taken of the same thing. The purpose of taking so many pictures of just the car was to teach me how to see differently, how to go right minded and become more critical in my observations. I was assigned the task of taking 25 or more pictures. It's interesting how, after the first four or five, I could feel a change in the way my brain felt and how time stopped for me. It was just me and the old jalopy. Sunni still employs this technique when her muse has abandoned her to kick start her creativity. Almost always the first four to six pictures will be common snapshots; after that the brain switches gears and closer observations are made. I began to see the play of light on the surface and how plants looked within the frame of the pictures. I began to turn the camera on end or at angles and explore the different options on the camera. We spent a wonderful couple of hours there shooting away. Below are the best of my results. Sunni was extremely pleased with my natural sense of balance and composition. We edited very few of the pictures!
