Found in the field behind
the Pelican Theaters on flat ground, arid, alkaline soil. |

The first nine pictures were taken in early June before the plant bolted.

The stem is not from the peony - it's from another plant that grew cheek by jowl. |

This and the next picture were taken July 2. So the middle of next June I should
be able to catch these in bloom! |
 |

This is October foliage. |

All of the pods were face down in the dirt with the seeds scattered about. |

The seeds are big red things - look just like kidney beans. Same size as kidney beans! |

The pods look a lot like cotton bolls and are a little larger.

This and the next photo were taken the first week of April |

|

This and the next eight photos were taken the first week of June |

FINALLY, after five years of stalking this plant, I caught the flowers in bloom. |

Strange peonies, the flower doesn't stand upright like all the others I've seen.
It nods over into the foliage and blooms with its face in the dirt. |
