Noxious Weed
Chinese Native
It looks as though there may be some fiber in this plant, but i don't think it will be viable until after the plant goes to seed. The water-rich stem seems, to me, to be too soft.
Since this is an Oregon invasive, next time I'm out to the dock I should harvest these plants and give them a whirl (pun intended).
Flag Iris
Iris Pseudacorus
This iris is a prolific, escaped cultivar and an invasive weed.
Poisonous
The entire species of Iris is mildly poisonous
The leaves of all iris makes beautiful paper and is easily processed in a kitchen blender.
This and the next two pictures were taken August 13 well after all blooming has stopped.
See how the fiber runs the length of the leaf, much like grass?
Here is a picture of Flag iris (left) next to Simplestem bur reed. The iris has blue-green foliage while the bur reed is yellow-green.
