Poisonous to animals |

This and the next four pictures were taken April 21. |

aka California butterweed,
California groundsel, California rayless butterweed, Groundsel, Rayless Ragwort |

I found these in the canal overflow
along Highway 97. The leaves were easily visible in April
and a bit harder to find as the overflow greened
up. |

I did a fiber check on this one and I'm quite pleased.
It's hollow with a strong and easily peeled bast. |

This plant has a mushy inner core. I would recommend
bast only when harvested green and processing the entire stem if it is harvested dry. |

This and the next four pictures were taken in late
July 2003. |

Found in a ditch along Highway 97 in the Midland area. |

Companion plants: Cattail, Deadly nightshade, Indian paintbrush. |

This is what the overwintered seedpods look like. I think. I'm not sure. I won't be
positive until I look at the plants again in October/November. |
