I found these in the canal overflow along Highway 97. The leaves were easily visible in April and a bit harder to find as the overflow greened up.

I did a fiber check on this one and I'm quite pleased. It's hollow with a strong and easily peeled bast.

This plant has a mushy inner core. I would recommend bast only when harvested green and processing the entire stem if it is harvested dry.

This is what the overwintered seedpods look like. I think. I'm not sure. I won't be positive until I look at the plants again in October/November.
