Bouncing
Bet #1
Saponaria
Officinalis |

Poisonous, also a
Medicinal and is a mild soap (good for woolens) |

aka Soapwort, Scourwort, Fuller's Herb, Hedge Pink, Maid's pink |

aka Wild Sweet William, Sweet Betty, and Lady-at-the-Gate |

Found in the foot of a box canyon, dry alkaline soil, 3% grade, arid area
surrounded by volcanic rock. |

Perennial |

Last year's overwintered pods with this year's new growth. This and the
next three photos taken April 18. |

These die back completely come winter. About the first week or so of March,
the first growth creeps out of the soil. |

Bouncing
Bet #2
Saponaria Spp |

Found along the highway on a sharp grade in soil similar to the first Bouncing Bet. |

Note how this one has doubled blossoms. The location was once a homestead somewhere
in the early 19th century. |

Since this is a perennial, it's entirely possible this was once planted by the lady
of the house and is possibly an antique hybrid. |

Shattercane
Sorghum bicolor
I found this on our property
only once in 2001. |

Wavyleaf Thistle
Cirsium undulatum |

Poisonous to
horses |

Poisonous to
livestock |

I found this on our property
and blooming in July. |

Last three photos were taken April 19. This was taken on
our property - trick is remembering where! |

Land is 3% grade, arid, alkaline soil. |

Thistle makes a terrific paper. Entire overwintered plant, omit leaves if green. |
