Comparison of benign and deadly look-alikes
Commonly mistaken Poison Hemlock or for Queen Anne's Lace which is ediblePoison hemlock has the red stain on the stem, the blood of Socrates. (This is how he was murdered) It is also known as Wild Carrot. Back packing one time we came across a nurse who had just found a group of teenagers who were out to live off the land . Unfortunately the plant book they used listed Wild Carrot so they boiled it and 2 members of their group ate it. It was a grizzly death. The dangers of common names. --Nancy
Queen Ann's Lace is year #2 of Wild carrot. Wild Carrot look like carrot (LOL) and smells like carrot.... sweet/edible. Wild carrot make a lovely light green paper... QAL- well, we've already dedicated long discussions to its challenges and rewards....
Wild hemlock *foliage* does resemble it (stems are a distinctly different green here, and thicker stalks and different branching) but can be distinguished by the BAD smell when broken (pre cooking). --Akua
