Making A Tigercane Egg

First I would like to thank Norajean Gatine for teaching me the zebra, tiger and leopard skin canes. Her patterns are as inspirational as they are deceptively simple. With her consent, I will show how to make a tiger cane in this lesson. This lesson covers making three different small tiger canes then covering and sanding an egg.

Supplies:

• Work surface
• Any clay brand, you can even mix brands (horror!! but yes - you can!)
  • 2oz (56.7gr) brown or gold metallic clay
  • 4oz (113.5gr) white or pearl white clay
  • 1oz (28.35gr) black clay - pearlized or not
• Pasta machine (optional, but very helpful)
• Cutting tool - tissue blade is the most effective
• Scissors - Optional - to trim excess clay
• An egg
• Thumbtacks - Optional - for piercing eggshells
• Syringes with needles to blow the egg
• Liquid polymer clay or diluent (if you don't have liquid clay, diluent is preferred but petroleum jelly or mineral oil will suffice)
• Oven for baking - preheated to 270°F (132°C)
• Baking tile
• Typing paper
• Rattle sounds:  Beads, rice, rocks, whatever strikes your fancy that will make noise. Jingle bells don't work. Round items will give a softer sound than those with corners and jagged edges.
• Funnel - Optional - (We will be making this with the typing paper.)
• Small hand roller (like four inches of one inch PVC pipe, a thick dowel, a small jar with straight sides. Just so long as it fits comfy into one hand.)
• Needle tool
• Dishwashing soap
• 400 & 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper
• 2 Towels
• Denim scrap or whatever you're wearing for buffing

 Syllabus

• Make two skinner blends from gold to white
• Roll and compact blends
• Roll and compact white
• Slice and add black
• Reduce and set aside
• Blow eggs & clean, cover with liquid clay
• Bake eggs
• Fill eggs and cover
• Smooth eggs
• Bake eggs
• Sand
